Mark DeJong is a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader and currently teaches at the Mount Royal University Conservatory. He holds degrees in saxophone performance from the University of Calgary, (BMus) and jazz performance from Rutgers University (MMus).
The core quartet is made up of David Lavoie on Trumpet and EVI, Joanna Borromeo on keys, Adam Pettigrew on bass, and Nate Chiang on drums.
Despite being relatively new to the local jazz scene as a group, members of this band have been holding their own for much longer as in-demand musicians in their own right, whether in Calgary, Vancouver, or Toronto. Calgary locals may have spotted them performing with other projects at outdoor festivals or inside one of Calgary’s often-frequented gems for live music, jazz and otherwise. Make no mistake, this isn’t your typical jazz group. Under multi-instrumentalist David Lavoie’s leadership, the band pulls off a tasteful variety of repertoire, reflecting Lavoie’s appreciation for lyrical melodies, angular melodies and melodies with unusual intrigue. Many of them are written by jazz icons whose musical contributions heartily withstand the test of time. Other melodies are of Lavoie’s contributions.
However, what might be most striking about the band is something beyond taste in repertoire and a reverence for the jazz language. These musicians not only play well together but, after having played weekly shows together since June 2023, genuinely enjoy the camaraderie, too. This energy—call it a love for music and a love of playing—is one that is readily picked up by audiences as much as it is conjured on stage.
